Shenice "Lightning" Lockwood loves softball. She's the captain of her team, the Fulton Firebirds, and is determined to lead them to be the first all-black team to win the Dixie Youth Softball Association 12U World Championship Title. Lightning and her team need to prove that black girls belong at bat.

Softball is in Shenice's blood. Her dad played baseball. So did her Pop-Pop, and her Great-Grampy JonJon did too. None of them could achieve their dream of going pro into Major League League because of various problems. Shenice's dad blew out his knee in college, and her Pop -Pop had to get a "real" job and start a family. But Shenice never knew why her Great-Grampy JonJon didn't get recruited, and when her father gives her JonJon's catchers mitt and shows her a trunk full of his baseball memorabilia, Shenice can't help wondering what happened.

Shenice also meets her great grandfather's brother, Great-Uncle Jack, who tells her that her Great Grampy was accused of a crime which caused him to end his baseball career, but it may have just been a set-up.

Her family's history starts to affect Lightning's ability to play well on the field...and her teammates begin to wonder if she can really lead them after all. As Shenice gets closer and closer to the truth...she is losing grasp of her dreams of the state title and her teammates trust. Can she uncover her family's mystery and lead her team to the Dixie Youth Softball Association 12U World Championship Title? Read the book to find out!
